Okamatsu
A moment to unwind in the city.
Founded in 38 of the Meiji period near Monzen-nakacho Station, wagashi maker Okamatsu crafts fragrant Tatsumi Hakkei monaka, yuzu-scented torayaki, and chewy strawberry daifuku—ideal sweets for a stroll through Fukagawa.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Situated steps away from the exit of Monzen-nakacho Station, Okamatsu is a traditional Japanese confectioner with roots tracing back to 38 (1905) in the Meiji era. The shop's signature specialty is the Tatsumi Hakkei Monaka, featuring crisp, fragrant wafer shells encasing a gentle, honest-tasting bean paste that makes it a trusted choice for everyday gifts. Unusually, smooth strained koshian monaka are available alongside the classic filling, earning a loyal following for their clean finish.
Among the baked confections, the torayaki stands out for its distinct personality. Inside its fluffy, tiger-patterned pancake dough lies bean paste with a vivid citrus scent of yuzu, offering a pleasant balance of delicate sweetness and refreshing zest. Traditional dorayaki with sturdier batter and a dense filling of sweet bean paste are also on hand, giving shoppers a choice of textures.
The showcase of fresh namagashi sweets is just as compelling. Offerings highlight the rustic charm of red beans, from strawberry daifuku with pleasantly thick, chewy mochi wrapping to substantial kashiwa mochi and rich kanoko. Chilled seasonal items—such as cool, smooth mizu manju and mizu yokan, alongside tender steamed chestnut yokan—bring seasonal variety to regular visits.
With its convenient location close to the station and a welcoming reception even for small purchases, it is an easy stop to make while exploring Fukagawa or paying respects at nearby shrines and temples.
